Books by Southern enginemen.

I have a liking for reading books by Southern enginemen etc. I have both Bert Hookers books as well as "Black Clouds & White Feathers" by R Turner and "Footplate Days on the Southern" by H Norman. Can anyone recommend any others?

I bought Jim Lester's book whilst at the 70A reunion, and I agree that it's a good book. Jim was kind enough to sign it for me!

A few weeks ago, I attended a Model Railway exhibition at Folkestone and managed to acquire an "ENGINEMAN S-R" badge as worn on the grease-top cap!

That's who produced the one I bought, to accompany the green BRITISH RAILWAYS "hotdog" badge that has been adorning my rucksack for some while now!

I've just been and checked the auction listing from whence I got my badge and all it says is "an ENGINEMAN SR (Southern Railways) badge, it looks brand new to me "
It came from Worcestershire.

When I get home at the weekend I'll list all the books I have from Southern enginemen.

Depends what you mean by books by Southern Enginemen. I'm a former SR engineman and have written 3 books, 'How Steam Locomotives Work', 'Racing Trains' and 'Forward! The Revolution in the lives of the Footplatemen 1962 - 1996'. All are now out of print but are available through either amazon or second-hand book sellers.

I like reading of the writers experiences on the footplate and what they thought of different classes of loco etc etc.

35013's book is definately worth a good read! Especially if you are working on steam engines these days. You will certainly pass you're Firemans test with both the Black book and with this book also.
I have to say there will be plenty of books/advice from people out there how Steam Locomotives work. But '35013's' is worthy of a purchase in my view.

I have just seen this book by Geoff Burch; Looks like it could be a very interesting read.

Geoff Burch will be launching his new book 50 years to the day since he joined British Railways.

Twelve chapters covering Geoff's initial interest in Steam Locomotives in the late 1950s as a Trainspotter then starting work as a 15 year old Engine Cleaner, performing Office Boy duties, working in Boilersmith's Shop and eventually becoming a Fireman in 1962. Geoff gives his account of working his way through the links with a diverse range of Drivers and Locomotives until the final day of steam on Sunday 9th July 1967 when he also had the honour of being one of the firemen of the last Locomotives to leave Guildford MPD that day. In particular, the 'Drivers and Firemen' chapter is dedicated to most of the men that Geoff worked with on the footplate - some 86 Drivers and 73 firemen who were employed at Guildford at the time.
