34090 Sir Eustace Missenden Southern Railway
34090 was another BB with a distinctive nameplate.
The crest was topped with the name, " Sir Eustace Missenden" with "Southern Railway" underneath.
I believe it had some dates as well??? Prove me wrong.
I found this image, but no decent picture of the 'plates.

Surely someone has a decent shot of the unique nameplate?
She was only rebuilt in August 1960, yet scrapped in July 1967.
What a shame.

I've had a look in my book on Bulleids, but no picture of 34090 in my book what so ever. I heard someone saying once the name "Sir Useless Eustace" was the appropriate name for her...
I will carry on having a look for a close up of the plates for you.
Thanks
Andy

You may beable to make the picture a bit better in Photoshop?..

The Original plate is displayed at the NRM, which shows it doesn't display any dates.

I think that I may have been guilty of that.

Re: 34090 Sir Eustace Missenden Southern Railway
34090 was know by us enthusiasts as The Milk Marketing Board Machine. Because she mostly seemed to perform like an old crate!
But I am sure there was something different about her. She sounded different. Did she have any blast pipe changes made?
I have a clear memory of her making what I believe was her unique crackling type of roar passing Oatlands Box at speed on a down train. I just have a feeling it was on the 17.30 ex Waterloo on 20th November 1966, (I have run behind her in my mileage book for that date). And I am sure I was in a compartment timing the run with "Doze" Thompson, whose log of the run is in Winkworths book. (Table 41 log A).
Can anyone shed any light on the different exhaust sound? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?
