are there 'elf' n' safety' regulations about restricted visability? surely the un-rebuilt condition would have less visabilty that that of a rebuilt version? although there is at least one main-line certified un-rebuilt pacific I know of.
to be honest I think it would be far easier to restore her to her current condition....
I suppose this all depends on whether the rebuild is to as close to original condition as possible or whether they intend to include any of the pre rebuild modifications like the angle fronted cab. On 35011 this originally happened in September 1950.

We will have to wait and see. But you only have to look at the likes of a Black 5 cab etc to see that there is not a great deal of visibility - You tend to go via mileposts and knowing the stretch of line anyway.

Well either way, it'll be good to have her back

Agreed, the most important thing is to get her back and running.

from what I understand they have been denied funding by the heritage lottery fund (or something simialr) due to the current number of preserved bullied pacifics that have been restored so they may need all the money they can get.....
restoring her into as-built condition may allow finincial backing?

I agree completely with you on that! So where are they now with funds?

no idea I'm afraid, I'm not connected with the project and have only asked Mel general questions about the project through e-mail

I think the funding issue may be one of the reasons that they are considering the possibility of unrebuilding the loco, there is a chance that funding may be made available if that path is taken. Lets hope that all the various people who have been clamouring for an unrebuilt on various other forums are willing to dig into thier pockets to help as well!
Rebuilt or Unrebuilt it doesn't really matter what is important is that 21C11 / 35011 steams again in whatever form!

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Does anyone know if there is a website dedicated to 35011? I can't seem to find http://www.generalsteamnavigation.co.uk anywhere.

The website url is confirmed as http://www.generalsteamnavigation.co.uk/ and is fully functioning as at 10:41 this morning.
If it does not work directly try accessing it via the Recent Developments page on the 35025 Brocklebank Line site.

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Thanks - It was down when I looked earlier. I had a shock that they had possibly abandoned everything!! I'm glad they haven't.
Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
No progress as of the summer 2010 - I think lack of space and volunteers is a problem. Is lack of funds also the issue I wonder? They seem to be working on the underside of the loco with the boiler still in situ. Painted silver (It looks complete) But is a boiler lift required to do the necessary work?
Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
It really seems if they are cracking on with the work? Isn't it time to get the boiler off now and maybe tackle the boiler? That way it will be easier to get the inside motion etc.... News is on the Spring 2011 update of 35011 Page
Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
More news on the website for the summer 2011. I think they should get the loco inside somewhere and arrange for the boiler to be lifted and for the chassis to be kept inside till such time as all the remedial work and boiler work has been done. Otherwise i fear all the work they have been doing will have been done in vain if we get any bad weather
Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Not sure if this is pure speculation or not? But apparently the Latest Heritage Railway magazine have said that 35011 will be out back into Unrebuilt condition? This will be alot of work surely??? Also what is the latest to the work that has been done? And is there a time-frame for the work to be completed??

Despite the phenomenal amount of work required I understand that "unrebuilding " is the current plan and possibly the only way forward that may get funding. A significant amount of preparatory drawings were done many moons ago when the idea was first mooted to "unrebuild" 35022 when it was still at Swanage. I believe that one of Bulleids colleagues Ron Pocklington was approached at this stage.

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Might as well update this thread, GSN has been transferred into the care of the General Steam Navigation CIC who are working to retro-convert her into pre-rebuilding condition. Shares are being sold in the locomotive to raise funds for the work with the first being purchased recently. The Society is looking for a new base on the south coast where the long journey can begin, Sellindge is to far away from the support team.

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Thanks for the update. Do you know when the boiler is going to be removed from the frames for work to be done on it?
Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
The boiler is years away from being removed. We are looking for a new base nearer the South West to begin the restoration and we can't remove the boiler until we move otherwise it'll double the cost of our future transport costs. We have plenty of tasks that can be done in the mean time

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
This might be of interest to some of the group. Today is the 72 anniversary of GSN entering traffic with the Southern Railway. So to mark the anniversary the GSNLRS have uploaded a rather special video to YouTube featuring the earliest known footage of the locomotive.
