35011 General Steam Navigation
I for one cannot forget this loco, how can I
Having gone down with the 02.15 Waterloo - Bournemouth paper train, and worked back the (0656 Bomo - Wloo), and 35011 with Driver G. Hooper. A fantastic machine, went like a rocket, and steamed well.
Everything went well, until we arrived at Clap. Jnct. Control wanted us, to work the train back, as far as Woking, as the Signal Box at Clapham Jnct had collapsed. Gordon said yes, and I said no. But he persuaded me eventually, and off we went tender first
What a night, and what a day.
I hope I can get Gordon to join this forum in August, and give his account

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Just to add to my previous post. It is sad to see this loco, rusting away. I certainly hope, that she will be restored, before I am scrapped. But its all down to finances.
But the problem which I have, is that they want to unconvert her, and put her back in original condition. No Eastleigh Works, do you believe, that it will work? I have my doubts, have the owners got the original drawings, and the expertise etc?

I don't see restoring her to Original condition is such a good idea. Firstly there are a few Unconverted WC's, so I personally cannot see what will be achieved by this anyway?

I can understand the desire to get an original condition MN back into service.
But the cost and work needed to do it correctly.............................

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
I agree, as 35011 is my favourite loco I would like to see her restored to her re-built state (it makes sense since she is already like this). I think they look much more elegant (than any other regions locos) in their rebuilt state.
Did 35011 acomplish anything unusual in her career? Any unusal events/stories etc.
did she have any major breakdowns during her life?
what was it like to be in the cab? Was she a good steamer?
sorry for the mass questions

Larry, in answer to your Questions. Yes 35011 was a good Steamer, and had good power. One of my favourites.
No major breakdowns, recorded; certainly not with me.
You ask if she did anything unusual in her lifetime on BR.. Yes she did with me when I was firing. We worked the 0215 Wloo to Bournemouth in 1964 Paper Train, and came back with the 0656 Bomo - Wloo. 35011 was our loco on the 0656 up. All went well till we got to Clapham Jnct, but the Signal Box had collapsed, and control asked us if we would work back to Woking, with the same stock. My Driver was interested, I wasnt particularly, but caved in.. So we went tender first Clap.Jnct to Woking with 13 coaches on.
I believe that to be a first to go tender first from London - Woking, where they relieved us at Woking, they then put another loco on. So there you have it, history made?

What with Driver G. Hooper, you have got to be joking. Line Speed, 45% cut off, and full regulator?

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
just recieved this from e-mail from the people restoring 35011
Thanks for your interest in our website and for your communication here.
Well, we have a long way to go and we shall need to raise funds, of course. If you are interested to donate please would you kindly let us know.
We would anticipate restoring 35011 back to main line running order, We are also hopeful that she could run anywhere that the railway lines permit (subject to weight restrictions, bridges etc.).
Although we have not ruled out restoring 35011 to an 'as-built' condition, it seems unlikely as we have been approached over time by a number of individuals wishing to do this same styled project. We feel that it would be cheaper and quicker to do such an alternative build completely from scratch, rather than by using an existing ex Barry loco.
...........and just for the record, we have not been approached by anyone associated with the current Railway Magazine web address which has been stated in the August 2009 edition.

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
yeah it has
didnt she recently donate her centre driving wheels to another loco? It may have been Braunton - but I may be wrong

Yes she did - And a new one will have to be cast if it hasn't been done already....
Don't get too excited yet - There is a long way for the loco to go, as she is only in the early stages of being rebuilt.
Not sure if Rumour or not, but I understand her boiler is pretty much sound??

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
well I e-mailed them a while back to ask for more info on the project and it seems:
- heritage funds think that there are enough rebuilt MN's out there already
- despite comments in 'The Railway Magazine' they were not approached about an un-rebuilt project.
The guy gave a general impression that they want her to be in re-built condition if possible.

Re: 35011 General Steam Navigation
Only a possible rulling restoration to unrebuilt status though. And can Sellinge turn her out onto the mainline if this is the case?

are there 'elf' n' safety' regulations about restricted visability? surely the un-rebuilt condition would have less visabilty that that of a rebuilt version? although there is at least one main-line certified un-rebuilt pacific I know of.
to be honest I think it would be far easier to restore her to her current condition....

Not sure on that matter about Visibility? But It won't be too bad as we know there is a certain Unconverted running on the mainline (After she has had her General overhaul).
You have to remember that the Merchants are slightly longer and wider. So if this is the case, then I can see the loco being restored to current condition.
