Re: 34052 at Waterloo
I'm sure 34017 Ilfracombe will beable to identify the Fireman!?
It's funny how fireman always wore gloves... I always fire without them as they tend to get in the way.. But they knew what they were doing better then than any of us do now - Thats for sure!!!
Experience and being that it was a job meant fireman had to learn quick....
Thanks Don for the continuous photos.

On the South Eastern they were called wipers.
They and the soap / towels were still issued until about the late 70's
I have a couple of bundles of new wipers that I rescued as they were going to be thrown out when a company went over to gloves issue
Anyone who works steam today is welcome to a few

Ok, wipers for the new cloths, but what did you call the washed ones? They had a slight parafin smell to them!

If fireboy isn't Graham Pack it could be Brian Masters.
Don't remember the 'soap and towel' issue - my memory is you were lucky to get new sets of blues!

Fireboy was one of the more polite names. I recall being told that I was just 'a little piece of shit' and that it was my job to see to it that said driver went home in a 'white' shirt! Ask some of the other ex-NE men about Frank 'utter c**t' Morris. I don't like to speak ill of the dead but this man was the chief reason for my departure from NE. Many of the old hand drivers were 'gentlemen' and some a joy to be with - Frank wasn't one of them.
The '3rd Man' is a wonderful movie with a very haunting theme tune.
