Saturday 2st July 1962 was one of the peak days of the year with most of the high season trains running. Nine Elms would have been stretched for motive power so Guildford Basingstoke and Feltham would all have helped out during the day.

This shot shows the now preserved 35028 at the head of the 13 coach 730 am Waterloo to Ilfracombe and Padstow just after the loco had backed onto the train. The guard appears to be talking to the fireman, perhaps giving him the load and the driver is oiling round at the front. The safety valves are lifting and the loco appears to be in fine shape. But who are the crew? Presumably Nine Elms at this early hour of the day. They were quite lucky as this train was usually a light pacific in the summer of 1962 and the Merchant should have had no trouble with the relatively easy schedule.

Thanks

It's always worked in the past. Not sure what I did differently this time.

I have to say that Don's shot of 35028 is a fantastic shot! Especially in Black and White!

Do you have the timings of this day for 35028 from Waterloo to Ilfracombe?

Oh and you must have gotten up really early to catch the 7:30am from Waterloo???

Best Wishes

Andy
