Post by 35005CP Fri May 29, 2009 8:07 am

Hi all,

I've got a fantastic shot of this loco at speed... If anyone would like to see please let me know and I will upload it.

Be great to find out the location and the speed... Funny how British India Line still exists today, my thinking is she has a fab boiler + pretty much complete.. She was pretty much one of the first Bulleids to get to get rebuilt...

Any updates and news would be much appreciated. And since leaving the MHR to go to Portland with what is happening now?

Thanks

Andy

She was, in fact, THE first Bulleid to be rebuilt in February, 1956. Her mileage at the time was 504,900.

Still no positive news I am afraid regarding 35018 but at least the loco remains safely stored all be it in the open at Portland.

imho, that isn't safe storage nor any attempt to restore the loco and look towards its future. Especially when left out in the open and open towards the likes of the sea.(Corrosion)

It would seem that 35018 has now been sold to John Bunch / Mr Atherton and will be moving up to Ian Riley's works on the E.L.R. for restoration. Hmm, the E.L.R. is rapidly becoming a mini Eastleigh!!!

It sound as if it'll be getting a wee bit crowded, what with Jeremy Hosking's MNs #22 & #27 being there. Very Happy

Does Jeremy Hosking also own lightweight "Flat Top" '#073 Question

Does Ian Riley still own MN #09, and is that still there Question

Any up to date info appreciated

From what I understand, JB owns 34073. Alot of work will be needed to get this running. But i think this is looking to be sold? Maybe someone else can clarify the situation on 34073 in the relevant thread?

35009 is expected to be overhauled alongside 35027 and a they are having a close look at 35022 with a view of overhauling. And yes Ian Riley does own 35009. So I guess we can expect to see these Merchants running on the mainline once again in the future. Lets hope we see these on the likes of the Kent Belle and Sussex Belle? Very Happy

JB does own 34073.

Jeremy Hosking does not currently have a "Flat Top" but would very much like one, he is however not prepaired to pay the asking price for 34073 (with or without spares etc)!

So is it true that 35018 has been moved to the East Lancs railway (Rileys Workshop) for a view to overhaul? Or is this just speculation at present?

35018 is currently still on Portland but is due to move to Riley's as soon as possible with a view to being overhauled.

Hi all,

I have just come across the following information;

This month's Steam Railway reports that 35018 British India Line has been purchased by Ian Riley and will be restored over the next 18 months using the frames of 35009 Shaw Savill (and will run as 35009, is the impression I get from the article) Once 35009 is operational 35018's frames will be restored using components from 35009.

Also there is a hint that Ian Riley is going to paint 35018 in Black!! That should look different. Weren't a couple painted black in the 1950's??

I am not sure that anything much is wrong with 35018's frames just Riley's taking the quickest path to getting his 35009 running. At one point it was rumoured that 18's frames had a crack but as I say this is a rumour.

As for the black livery the wartime built loco's all carried it, I am not aware of any loco's carrying it in the 1950's but am willing to be proved wrong!

Two abnormal load trucks turned up at Portland late yesterday afternoon (I work across the way at South West Coaches). When I spoke to one of the drivers he said they were there to take British India Line to Carnforth. The trucks were still there when I went out on my run this morning, still unloaded but one of the trailers had been deployed in front of the loco and all of the clutter that had built up around her cleared away.

This afternoon the loco was on a low loader and they were making the final adjustments to the tender on another low loader. When I asked where she was going I got the definite impression they didn't want to tell me. The only answers I got were grunts or "Dunno mate.".

I've created a personal album and uploaded photos I took this evening to it. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so had to use my phone.

Thanks for the Info. From what I can gather; it looks as though she has gone up to Carnforth?
Does anyone know if parts are intended to be used for 35009?

There was a very tatty Bulleid tender on a low loader in Rownhams services on the M27 east earlier. Could this have been part of 35018?

When I left work this evening the trailer with the loco on it was parked back in the yard. Neither of the tractor units were in view. The second trailer with a "very tatty Bullied tender" was not in view but might have been parked out of sight - unlikely. The tender was (once) B.R. green with the B.R. (Lion holding a wheel) logo. Strangely, although most of the logo had faded, the wheel, on the left side at least, was quite bright.

The company doing the move are Moveright International (they have a web-site which is quite interesting) and I toyed up with the idea of e-mailing them and asking them outright what they're doing but I'm afraid I haven't got the balls!

Latest update is that 35018 has definately been bought by WCRC and work will start in earnest once the completion of resident Jubilee 'Galatea' has been completed this year.

35018 - British India Line Empty Re: 35018 - British India Line

Post by 35005CP Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:09 am

I have come across this information recently about the differences between 35018 and other members of her class;

Here's a recap on the differences on 35018:

LHS:

The small ejector pipe along the left hand side of the boiler curved around the nameplate on 35018, whereas the curve was nearer the smokebox with the rest of the class.

RHS:

1. The two boiler water-feed pipes into the clack valves had two 90 degree dog-legs in them that were highly visible above the running plate. However, these were straightened-out as per the rest of the class at a later date.

2. Snifting valve was obscured by the smoke deflector, whereas a cut-out in the bottom l-h corner of the deflector accommodated the valve on the rest of the class.

Both sides:

1. Position of the mechanical lubricators was different to the rest of the class, although difficult to see how with 3/4 views of the locomotive.

2. As originally outshopped, 35018 did not have handrails on the smoke deflectors. These were a later refinement fitted two months after entry into service.

3. Sand filler pipes were shorter than on the rest of the class.

Does anyone know for sure if this information is correct and if they have any photos or information to back this up please?
Many Thanks

Andy
