Slightly going off subject, but tell me if I am wrong. It states at the bottom of Page 2 that H1 Atlantic Nº2039 was being used as the test bed for Bulleid's sleeve valve design for the Leader project. Is this the same Atlantic that the Bluebell are trying to re-create?

I believe so, but wouldn't swear to it.

The Leader was an incredibly brave attempt by Bulleid to prolong steam traction. I don't think it was ever going to work as intended, but had the politics of the day been otherwise, it might have formed the basis of a successful design. I have an idea that Bullied really intended it to be an oil-burner from the outset, especially given the small grate area.

Talking of oil burning, it's worth quoting from "Bulleid Last Giant of Steam":

"21C-136 Westward Ho! was then fitted with a more advanced Laidlaw-Drew 'Swirlyflo' type of burner which came as a revelation. With the fireman able to sit and watch she hauled a van train of 600 tons up the 1 in 250 gradient out of Eastleigh with consummate ease. Later she worked the [ACE] from Waterloo to Exeter, needing only to pick up water at Salisbury, with the same assurance."

On the abrupt cessation of the move to oil-burning, Bulleid rather bitterly complained that if the (road) competition could use oil fuels, then why not the railways? I think this was one of the key factors that, had it been allowed to continue, would have extended the life of steam traction.
