Re: 34092 - City of Wells
Hi everyone,
Is anyone able to tell me why 34092 has a Wells nameplate rather than city of Wells Nameplate?
Thanks
Andy

34092 was originally named just Wells. It was renamed City of Wells in March 1950 about 6 months into its BR life. Not sure why it's being called Wells at present, though I read they'll change to its full name at some point. The more surprising thing is that BR chose to include the place in the West Country names which were intended to refer to places served by SR. Wells was at the end of the S&D branch from Glastonbury; most passengers arrived on the GW branch. It's in Somerset, so it qualifies as "West Country", but then so was Bath in those days, a much more significant destination than Wells. The Wells branch closed in 1951, breaking the link between the town and the SR.
