35004. Cunard White Star.

Thanks for this snippet of imformation 34012 Launceston. I was not even aware of this incident to 35005, and Im sure not many locomen were from other depots. In those days, we just accepted withdrawls, as part of every day life, and in most cases; werent aware that they had gone.

I suspect when Admin returns today, from filling his tender up, there will be signs of a "blown guage glass", as it is his favourite loco, having fired to it on MHR.

but yes, we look forward to its overhaul, and returning back to traffic on the Mid Hants; hopefully as soon as possible!

If I recall, 35004 was allocated to Bournemouth, and consistently worked by Bomo Crews. The only time I got on her was LE to W*loo, P&D turns. Never on the main line.

There is a chap who lives in Ramsgate that I know who has set up a society for people with an interest in the Titanic. There was a picture of him in the local paper, and on the wall of his lounge was one of the name plates from Cunard White Star!

They are worth a few bob then.

During 1965, not sure of exact date, but before July, worked return of 2.45 papers with 35004. Almost unique amongst 'packets' she liked a light bright fire. At Soton, we were joined on the footplate by a chap from Swindon works - Sooty and I made the sign of the cross and hung garlic round our necks. The man from the gas works railway took my seat and then hung on for grim death as I gave him a copy book demo of how to fire an MN and Sooty gave 004 some serious welly. A wonderful trip and Swindon man's suit and shirt were a grubbier shade of black!!!

I am surprised a man from THAT place could even get onto the cab of a loco with a decent five digit number starting with 3 on the outside!

I'm not sure GWRman had ever been on a footplate before, at speed, there were one or two points during the trip when I though he looked a little queasy!! It was one of those wonderful trips where you know you're on top of the job - needle hovering on the red line and the water bobbing nicely at 3/4 of a glass. The sort of trip where half a dozen well placed rounds, brought a touch of black to the exhaust and put up a white feather from the safety valves. A joy to be 'at work' - no mate it was 'playing' - I'd have done the job for free if they'd asked!

Don't go saying that, you'll be asked to pay all your wages back!

Several of the fireboys in link3 were known as the greedy b******ds because we were paid more than £1000 pounds for the year april 64/5. Much of this was down to 'mileage' payments and of course 'rest day' working - I'm not sure if I ever had a rest day - it didn't feel like it at the time. As for paying wages back - stones and blood are words that might be appropriate!!
