Re: Pullmans
Does anyone know where those Pullmans came from for the Ocean Liner Express? From memory I think the Bournemouth Belle set were in use everyday.

I believe they were stored, additional sets at Clapham Yard in the mid to late 50s, but I too was only an enthusiast then.

Does anyone remember, or have any Pics of the Green Livery Pullmans in the 50s, used on Ocean Liner Express Boat trains?
I remember seeing some at Wloo, late 50s?

Thanks for that. I doubt you'd get such a lovely rake of coaches strored for occasional use these days!34017 Ilfracombe wrote:Bryan Benn wrote:Does anyone know where those Pullmans came from for the Ocean Liner Express? From memory I think the Bournemouth Belle set were in use everyday.

Re: Pullmans
You've made me think now. Clearly it's not the Belle as the discs are wrong and anyway the Belle was NE Duty 434. I must do some research. Maybe JC can help?

Re: Pullmans
As far as I can recall, the spare cars were kept either at Clapham Yard or Stewarts Lane. There were some special boat trains which used them so they would get a number of outings each year.
The green pullmans were used, among others, as buffet cars on the Charing X - Hastings trains before the demu's took over

Ah, so someone else saw the Green Pullmans, so were they eventually withdrawn from service, or painted in Pullman Car Livery?

Re: Pullmans
Actually Battledown, just short of MP 51 on a cold and dreary Saturday June 30th 1962. Taken with my Franka 35mm on TriX. Some of these shots are producing half decent images with a lot of tlc from Photoshot. I had this camera from September 1961 until I bought an Agifold 6x6 in April 1963 and this camera then took me through to the end of steam.

Re: Pullmans
A further small piece of info what I have discovered is that the green Hastings line pullmans were sold by the Pullman Car Co to BR about 1960 & then used in the Southampton Docks boat trains. I think they had a short life as such & were withdrawn after a few years

Thanks John, that would explain why they were in Green Livery.
Have you any idea where they were scrapped, and how many were involved?

Re: Pullmans
Weren't the Golden Arrow Pullman Parlour first in a green and grey livery? Or is this about another Pullman?
Re: Pullmans
A bit more info that I have found out is that there were a total of 6 cars built in 1926 by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co for use on the Hastings line (Cars nod. 180-185). After the war 182/3/5 were converted to Buffet cars & still used on the Hastings line. The others went into the general Pullman stock.
In 1958 all 6 were sold to BR carrying the nos. S7872S - S7877S & used on Southampton Docks boat trains.
2 of the cars are still in existance, i.e., 184 & 185. They can both be found on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.
All cars had names originally but these were lost (I think) in 1932 when they were converted from first class to composite cars.
The K&ESR cars have reverted to their original names of Theodora (184) & Barbara (185).
I have found out that the preserved cars were withdrawn by BR in 1963 & believe that the others went at the same time.

Re: Pullmans
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have the consist/Formation for the Southern Region Golden Arrow Pullman Set? As I understand it 3 Parlour Cars were converted to Brakes, but didn't look like it in the formation set?
Thanks
Andy
