34092 - City of Wells
Hi all,
Does anyone know what the progress is with this loco? It seems to have been a long time with the overhaul since she last run... I can't find any progress on her on the website. This is the latest I can find? So it appears as though she is close to running? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keighley_and_Worth_Valley_Railway#Steam_locomotives
It states that the boiler cladding is now on and the boiler is being tackled? Strange, you would think that the boiler would be tackled first before putting all of the cladding on???
If anyone has any photos recently - It would be great to see. Brings back some good memories of this loco from when I was a youngster! Fond memories seeing it with my dad.
Thanks
Andy

If you scroll down the index page of the KWVR website you will find a picture of the newly completed but unpainted tender for 34092. Work on the loco is now concentrating on the boiler and the fitting of the flue tubes.

Excellent - Thanks for the feedback. So going very well then. Better than expected. Could be a possibility of returning to steam next year, especially now they are close to having done the cladding?
Re: 34092 - City of Wells
Does anybody have any news on 34092 with current progress or expectation to steam?
Re: 34092 - City of Wells
It looks as though 34092 is nearing completion; http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/5053472.Tender_nearer_to_reunion_with_loco/
But when exactly I don't know. Although in the article it states another 2 years. I wonder if the reason she is taking some time is because of the extensive repairs needed to be done to get her fit for mainline duties once again?

According to the guy's at the K&WVR the loco will not be going mainline.

That is very sad news... I wonder if she is going to be fitted with the Giesel Ejector again? This is one reason why I think she should return to mainline use. If for anything to get the money back for the extensive overhaul.
Re: 34092 - City of Wells
The overhaul has been a complete nightmare for the group as if you remeber they had the loco's axleboxes stolen and then later flood dammage!

If "City of Smells" is unlikely to go mainline, and the group in question are cash-strapped due to the above problems, perhaps they could come to an arrangement with "Braunton"'s owners to use the Giesl ejector. Just a thought.

I agree, it would certainly be intersting to have a rebuilt with a Giesl ejector.

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
And with "Braunton" going "mainline", the cost of the Giesl ejector would pay for itself very quickly both in terms of performance, and possibly more important, less coal would be used!35012 wrote:I agree, it would certainly be intersting to have a rebuilt with a Giesl ejector.

I've often wondered how a rebuilt would perform with a Geisel ejector fitted.

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
From memory I vaguely remember a 9F being fitted with a Giesel Ejector (92250 I believe). I believe this is what kicked off the the testing on other locos. I also believe there were plans a-foot to fit 50 of the Bulleids with the Giesel Ejector - But money wouldn't allow. Also merchant Vavy's were in the pipeline for being tested upon - But never happened.
With regards to 34092, this I believe was done when she was at the KWVR? i don't remember reading or seeing any pictures of her with it fitted prior to Preservation?

I'll have a rummage around when I get home, after visiting the pub for some Stress Management Therapy , and see if I still have the copy of The Railway Magazine that has the article in it.

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
34064 Fighter Command was fitted with a Geisel ejector from 1962 - it was highly successful but was never carried forward because of the impending demise of steam.

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
Page 20 of the current edition of Railway Herald (No 259) has a picture of 34092 in Hawarth yard outside the shed. The loco is seen with around three quarters of the air smoothed casing now in place. The tender complete with new tank can just be made out behind the loco.

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
Does anyone know if the loco is scheduled to be steamed this year or not? Also, i think that a WC running on only a 5 mile line is a bit of a waste? Doesn't anyone else think so?
Re: 34092 - City of Wells
It would be a terrible shame, in my opinion, to have a Giesl-fitted WC restored but unable to run mainline. The danger, of course, is of suffering the same fate as Fighter Command, which bent everything in a high-speed slip (presumably because it had the power to do so?).

'The Volcano re-awakens' An update on the KWVR website showing 34092 with a fire lit for the first time in over 20 years!! The link is here;
They are saying that she is still a long way from completion? She looks pretty much complete to me? Does anyone know what is left to do?

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
Having bought the latest copy of Steam Magazine yesterday. The latest news is that City of Wells should be completed within the next 12 months and for the first year shall be runing on the KWVR to get back some of the costs and to pay for TPWS, OTMR and Air-Braking. The intention is for the Volcano to be run on the mainline eventually.
Also she will have to get back her speedometer that is currently fitted to 34067.
Good news. Lets hope to see her doing some storming runs down the South!! :-)

Re: 34092 - City of Wells
34092 is now looking substantially complete. She has been re-fitted with the Giesel Ejector. Apparently Christmas is as soon as she will return??
All pipework is pretty much complete in the cab. so good news. Now can we have her on the mainline please?
