Warm the teapot, and then 2.5 spoonfulls of loose tea.

Milk and Sugar in the Mug, and after the tea has brewed for a few minutes, then pour.

Not forgetting the dunking biscuits - absolutely lovely!

Teabags, no; not for me!

There was once a driver, now retired from a certain depot in Kent (no, not that, now retired, driver, Admin)

He'd moan like hell if us young'uns (for it was that long ago) made the tea with teabags (or sweepings as he'd call them)

One day his mate (can't say who that was) was instructed to make the tea and duly did what he was told (for the mate was still young and minus grey hair, in those days)

Only thing is, said mate only had tea bags, not wishing another rollocking, he split the tea bags up and made the tea

Now retired driver eyed up the leaves in the tea and downed at least two mugs full, commenting "ah thats better, proper tea from you for a change, much better than those sweepings they put in those tea bags",

I wasn't going to suggest anyone.... Cool
At least 34017 Ilfracombe knows how to make a decent cuppa! I think I have educated the Wife in making a better cup, so I don't think my learning curve on making a Proper Cuppa has gone to waste??

The art of making a good cup of tea, is not to purchase PGT; made with dust, and comes out as weak as anything. And you need 6 teabags per pot, to get anything decent.

This is the tea, that I purchase, and will travel miles for it

A good ole bag of tea leaves! now that does make a proper job out of what should be a proper cuppa!! Although it should be strained! I hate drinking the bottom of it afterwards! Leaves a bitterness taste afterwards and then you need another to wash it down with afterwards and it all just goes from there..... Laughing

Admin, really!

"Proper Job"?

have you been spending time in Cornwall?

There was a driver at 74D who'd drink the tea, be it hot, cold, stewed....

When he came in the lobby his fist comment was always "anyone made 'er?"

As a new boy I once made the error of emptying the cold stewed remanents of my tea can out of the cab

This driver raged "if you fxxcking ever do that again, youngun, you'll fxxcking follow it"

The procedure was, we made the tea, we poured ourself a cup, we then gave him the can, it we wanted a second cup, we had to ask

A goup of us once made him a special can of tea in the lobby

We knew that he was coming in so, empty all of the old stewed tea from all of the can's into one, top up with hot water

In he walks

"anyone made 'er?"

"it's in the can mate"

after a couple of cups, he exclaimed what a lovely brew it was

I can recall firing to Harry Pope, and we would depart from Wloo, with a down Bomo, with a full can of tea. Harry would still be drinking that *Stewed Tea* at Eastleigh. Courtesy of the Regulator Glands on a Bulleid.
Does anybody else remember the water softners that were put into the tenders, that had chemicals in them? Shocked

I was under the impression that water treatment was used when the MNs were originally built, because of the "hard" water in the south.

I believe that the TIA water treatment system was originally used and that when some of the tender were modified, the TIA system was replaced bY the BR system, which is why some locos have a yellow disc on the cabside whereas other had a yellow triangle - depending on the sytem used.

Both the triangle and circle refer to the type of water treatment. Click on the link then scroll down until you get to "Channel Packet" and you'll see that it has a circle on the cabside:-

One NE driver, I recall, brought his tea 'ready made' in an old pop bottle which he would put up on the manifold to get hot. As his fireboy you didn't get so much as a whet!! And yep! I've strained the stewed brew from the grouts when coming over the top at Roundwood - all in a days work!!! That's probably why I always drink fresh ground coffee today - can't stand the tea!
