I have just one of my original timing log books left. Plus three books with copied up logs. But I am getting great help in retrieving my old logs from 1963 to 1967. I am sure as that develops I will have some more interesting things to discuss!

But back to that one original timing book.

It shows I did an overnight 25/26th November 1966. I would not have been alone!

Started on the 18.09 ex Waterloo with 34002 and a very slow run to Woking! Then a good run back with 34001 and driver Lockhart, (Eastleigh man?). Driver French, (Bomo driver?), took 94.42 to Basinsgtoke on the 21.20 with 34077! Got off that at Southampton, obviously couldn't risk Brockenhurst let alone New Milton for the up mail! (03.48 into Waterloo).

Had a type 4! on the up mail. And I timed it from Basingstoke to Woking. Embarassed

Then we had a really good run with Gaffney and 34093 on the 02.30 ex Waterloo from Woking to Basingstoke. Crossed to the local line at Brookwood, but still did a very fast time and a max in the high 80s.

But then I got off at Basingstoke! WHY?

Had to wait 45 minutes to get on the 02.45 with 34015 and a very ordinary run down to Southampton.

Somehow got back to Basingstoke and had a nice fast run on the 07.05 ex Basinsgtoke, (stations to Farnborough then Woking and Waterloo), with 34002 on 4 with Brice.

Then on to a day of mediocre runs including the long footbridge at Brockenhurst behind 41320. Ah the long footbridge! You got your ticket clipped crossing from the down to the up platform at Brockenhurst on the station footbridge. But you could go out to Lymington and back on the shuttle train which rarely had a ticket check. It left on the down side at Brockenhurst and arrived back on the up side. So you changed from down to up platforms at Brockenhurst without using the short station footbridge and without getting ticket clipped! Hence the Lymington branch train got called "The Long Footbridge"!

But back to that question about the 02.30 and great running behind Gaffney. Why on earth would I, (we), have abandoned that train at Basinsgtoke?

Keep this thread going Bryan! This is all brilliant stuff... there is no point in advertising on other forums as it is clear no peoples are interested.... No detriment to you my friend - I have been on that partcular forum for sometime and you get to know how people work and how they act especially - And I want no part of it as this is my baby as well as 34017 Ilfracombe and you're timings and knowledge are your's - Hence we can all pull together to achieve it....

The NE crew worked the 2.30 only to Basingstoke, then came back on the 7.5 ex Basingstoke. This certainly happened on Sats but I'm not sure if this was the same on Mon - Fri.

The heading is wrong but I can't change it yet. The full "Reply" mode is not showing!

But the overnight was 25/26 November. Friday/Saturday. And my notes do say it was Brice back from Basingstoke on the 07.05.

Even without checking my log books, I know I wasn't with you although I did have some pretty dire overnights. One of them though gave me my best lineside tape recording of a Bulleid, climbing away from Brockenhurst with Adams of Bomo at the regulator. It was a calm dry night and the tape lasts about 5 minutes. Superb

I've now looked at my logs. I was on the 2.30 that morning & came back on the 7.5 . John Gaffney was the driver on both, fireman Bryce. Some good running both ways albeit with light loads with max in the high 80's.

John, can you please re - check your logs. Because the 02.30 was the Portsmouth Direct Paper train, worked by Fratton Men, and had no passenger coach. Or do you mean PM? Surprised

Thanks John. For the 07.05 run I had just pencilled in "Brice", obviously just adding the fireman's name.

What max did you get with 34002 up from Woking? I've got a 20.3 sec half mile shown for Walton. So we certainly reached 88 ½ mph! But I suspect that with the acceleration up to that speed it may well have been 89 mph!

I notice that later the same day on the 13.03 arrival from Bournemouth, Driver Kiddle was trying hard for the position of "Gnome 2" by also trying to get me to record 20.3 seconds. But for a quarter mile, not a half!

And even later that day I did the long footbridge from Brockenhurst with x1320.

It was definitely the 02.30. We joined it at Woking where we left at 03.06. And left it at Basingstoke to catch the 02.45 ex Waterloo with 34015, Depart Basingstoke at 04.15.

Bit of a strange overnight. Starting with an almost unchecked run on the 21.20 to Basingstoke. 94 mins 42 seconds, (did anyone get anymore than that?), 34077 and driver French. Stop for a blow up at Fanborough. Back from Southampton to Woking behind a box on the up Mail. And then the 02.30 ex Waterloo.

As Bryan says it was definately the 2.30 am. I did it from Waterloo, nothing much between Waterloo & Woking (max 64) but we did it in less than the booked time. On the up run I've got a max of 87.5 at Walton OT. We ran local line from New Malden to Raynes park & still got in early.

The 2.30 dropped vans off at Woking (but no passsenger coaches) which then went to Portsmouth H via the direct line. Also there was a 3.40 vans to Guildford.

On Sun mornings there was a 3.35 (advertised as 3.30) Waterloo - Portsmouth H via the direct line which did convey passengers. I did it just once & it was Fratton men. It ran first stop Havant

Im really confused with this one. I cant even remember a coach on the 0230 ex Wloo, nor the stop at Woking for detatchment Bryan. Hopefully, we can shed more light on it at the reunion. Mr Bryce will most likely be there, and W. Hutchings, whom was in the same link as Boy Gaffney!
