1957 CEP stock
I make no apoligies for this, but my favourite EMUT stock was the 4 CORs, but next in line after the Westinhouse stock were the CEPs, unrefurbihed of course. Until Swindon Works messed them up in 1981.
IMHO, driven with respect, you could always get yourself out of trouble with them. The amount of trains, that ive driven with them, and never failed. A remarkable unit, built on the 4 COR units. Im glad some are preserved 2311, and 2315.
When I was a Driver at Victoria (E) that was our main stock on Boat Trains, and they did justice to the service. In fact, once I left Dover W.D, well late, and arrived Victoria, well early.

Re: 1957 CEP stock
Well, as we've discussed before, 34017 Ilfracombe) a good CEP could be very good, but a bad one was plain awful, proper coffee-spillers once the motor bogie started hunting
I have to agree that they were at their best prior to facelift (when they still had the "claw-hand" controller) and if we get real anoraky (is that a word?) I liked the '51 CEP's
Still the best in ice/snow/low adhesion (well, after Mary's and EPB's anyway), sorry Admin, but your CIG's and their VEP cousins were much harder to handle in those conditions, not to mention their habit of blowing main aux (100 amp) fuses in the snow and ice

In response to 33110 s post. With the Gen at each end of 51 stock, and ice/snow/ low adhesion. I would agree with him that CEPs were better than 421/423 in dealing with these situations. The older type stock had very few problems.
I can however, bring to light from my experience of 1987 Snow conditions. Having travelled to work, with 8 CEP, and a class 47 haulage during the Snow. Eventually, I was given a job by tcs Ken S, and to work a Boat Train to DWD. first train down the Main Line, and the Snow was deep. I notched up, and eventually arrived at DWD, having blown majority of my Shoe Fuses. I wanted a quick cup of tea, and upon arrival. they loaded my train up with passengers. Harry, the tcs showed disinterest, about my fuses. I said "Oh well, what comes down, goes back". Kept losing the line going back, but got there. Remembering to keep my front shoe on the Juice rail.
new units, forget them, under those conditions?

In respect of Ice Mode on latter stock, from experience, when Drivers are cotemplating bad weather conditions. Ice Mode is next to useless?

Yeah, well all that Ice Mode does is stops the unit cutting out (Main Circuit Breakers opening) on you too soon when its monitors detect traction current spikes, due to the shoes lifting and droping on ice. In bad conditions, it delays the inevitable

My preference is for un-refurb'ed Ceps. The airlline style seating was not as comfortable, not to mention the atrocious hopper windows.34017 Ilfracombe wrote:Lets get back to 1957 Stock please, thankyou
The East Kent Rly is celebrating the anniversary of the East Coast electrification on 13-14 June - exactly 50 years. They will be running their Bep ( which is 4Cep 7105 with the only surviving Bep buffet coach ) with an MLV. Motive power will be their Gronk.
I believe that the preservation group that operates there have now acquired a fourth MLV! It is also their intention to DE-furb their Cep, by replacing the hoppers with sliding vents. As to whether they can retro re-fit the guard's office each end complete with periscopes remains to be seen.

It would be great to see along with some photos? Surely de-furbing the CEP will mean more money?
