34064-The Giesel
Here's a couple of shots of 34064 near to the summit at Milepost 31. The first is on 1st June 1963 and she's on a down Bournemouth relief. A very hot day when we had cycled from home in Shirley, near Croydon. The second clearly shows the Giesel ejector as 34064 clears the summit with the 1054 Waterloo to Swanage on Saturday 4th August 1962.
Many thought that this loco was as good as a Merchant but I am not so sure. I had some good runs with it but not much above good light pacific standard.
What do others think, especially the enginemen who drove and fired it?

Re: 34064-The Giesel
I have only ever know City of Wells (34092) with a Giesel Ejector. How many other Bulleids had this as I was aware that this is what 34092 was famous for?
As for merchants they are fun to fire compared to a WC/BB because the firebox is slighlty wider and you know you are in for a good day with them!

But I would love to hear enginemens perspective as you say on this loco and others fitted with Giesel Ejectors,,, I'm hoping some got on 34064 and 34092?
Re: 34064-The Giesel
34064 was the only Bulleid fitted with a Giesel ejector in BR days. Another 20 were planned to have them fitted but the idea was scrapped. I often wonder how a rebuilt loco would perform with one.

Re: 34064-The Giesel
That is absolutely correct - there was an article in The Railway Magazine a couple of months ago devoted to the Giesl ejector, with a picture of "Fighter Command" thus fitted.34028 wrote:34064 was the only Bulleid fitted with a Giesel ejector in BR days. There was no mention of how it ended up on "City of Smells"

I have vague memories of reading somewhere that City of Wells was fitted with the Geisel ejector to help cope with the variations in modern coal.

It seems Giesel Ejector is the flavour of the month.... I do believe City of Wells though Alistair was fitted after mainline duties on her first overhaul at the KWVR?
I also vaguely remember being told that an important fitter/Builder and knowledgable of Bulleids was involved in the setting up of the middle engine.

On "Fighter Command", it was also found that not so much coal was being used , and that it increased the power making it perform more like a Merchant Navy!34028 wrote:I have vague memories of reading somewhere that City of Wells was fitted with the Geisel ejector to help cope with the variations in modern coal.
