Buffering up

Post by 35005CP on Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:50 am

Hi all,

I have just finished watching a very good video on the West Coast mainline in the 60's from Carstairs up to Shap and to Carnforth and Lancaster. Great pieces of footage. I have a question which i hope somebody can answer? It appears from watching the video that they only buffered up and the Vaccuum pipes weren't connected up? Was this correct proceedure, or possibly they didn't show the firemen connecting the Vac pipes up? If so, how would the drivers know from either end that they were ready to depart and slow the train down?
I hope somebody has an answer to this. Thanks in advance.
