MHR to extend there 10 mile line
Hi all,
This is worthy of a conversation!! The MHR are going to extend as shown here;
Here is the quote and Interteting ideas;
"Steam will soon reach the city of Winchester thanks to a very generous, once in a lifetime donation. The businessman who has offered up the funds to extend the Watercress Line through to Itchen Abbas and then on to Winchester, has no interest in football but a passion and love of steam trains. At this stage, the gentlemen wishes to remain anonymous.
The donation not only finances the project, but also brings with it the supply of track to reinstate the line. The 7 miles of track will be transferred to the railway from an aborted tunnelling project, the objective of which was to provide a competing service to the already operational Channel Tunnel rail link. It is understood that a wrong turn was made taking the line away from French soil and out towards the Atlantic. Funds did not materialise to complete the project that would have seen the UK join the continental US. The track has never been used and due to its undercover nature, is in 'as new' condition. A remarkable state of affairs.
The project which commenced today, is projected to take many years to complete, but the prospect of being able to take the train from Alton right through to Winchester fulfils a lifelong dream for many at the railway and its wide base of supporters. The railway already has plans to operate special titled services such as the steam hauled 'Winchester Wanderer'. The 17 mile route will also enable the return of authentic commuter services using the Society's heritage Hampshire diesel unit. It is not yet known if Ticket Collectors will need to be renamed to Revenue Inspection Officers to meet with current trends.

Funding will also cover a new CO2 initiative being led by the engineering team at Ropley shed. The 3rd electric rail will also be extended from Alton to Winchester as part of this project, the steam locomotive fleet will be adapted to include a pick up shoe with electric motors in the tender. This would help to reduce coal consumption by 100%. Steam effects will be provided through electrically powered boilers. The initiative is believed to be the very first of its kind ever attempted in preservation and could pave the way for future projects elsewhere."
I don't think anything like this has been attempted anywhere else?
