35005 Overhaul Empty 35005 Overhaul

Post by 35005CP Sat May 23, 2009 2:33 am

Hi All,

Word has it, is that 35005 Canadian Pacific (My favourite loco) is going to be done to mainline standard again. The problem being is that she is way down the list. So it looks as though overhaul will be booked for 2012 at the latest and say 3 years for overhaul, which means she will not be seen steaming again till 2015 at the very latest! Sad
But being a flagship loco for the MHR, you would expect this engine to be of high priority seen as they have the funds set aside for the overhaul. She will need a new throatplate, firebox and ashpan as the current one has a huge gaping hole in it.

Thanks

Andy

I remember seeing Can Pac on the mainline some years ago when it was painted in BR Express Blue.

I really couldn't see the point as MNs only ever carried that livery in original form.

Anyway, hopefully the work will be carried out sooner rather than later.

Rumour has it that Mr Riley intends painting 35009 Blue!

35009 is still in kit form and it is likely to remain so for the next few years, according to my reading of Mr. Riley's web site. Shame about the length of time it will be before we see 35005 in action again - but 006 looks like it will be up and running in the not too distant future. Thing is, why is this engine deep in enemy territory? MMMM!!

Do you mean GWR territory? That too has confused me somewhat! I think 35006 should be united with 35005 at the MHR. Be good to see those 2 double heading. That is of course when the MHR get round to overhauling her.
Going back to 35009 - She is still showing on Ian Riley's website as being up for sale still. As I understand it, she will be going into the Mr Rileys workshop once the other Black 5 is finished.

Boiler overhaul has been estimated at some £100K.

OMG - Thats an awful lot! You sure you've got the figure correct? As I understand it she needs a new throatplate - Remember 35005 did have an extension on her ticket; so I can't see a major amount of work needed? Where did you get the information from?

Unfortunately yes, thats the figure the MHR's boiler man came up with!

The source of information was from guy's working in the MHR's locomotive department itself. Andy Netherwood had come up with the £100K in response to a request from Colin Chambers / the M.H.R.P.S. board.

I have to agree with 35012 as I have also heard the figure of £100K being banded about. It will be interesting to see what happens when they do start on 35005, it is commonly known that the loco needs a new firebox tubeplate for which the railway already has the blank in stock. What is unknown at this stage is how much of the foundation ring or firebox inner and wrapper will need to be replaced or what the state of the front tube plate is (to the best of my knowledge the boiler still has it's tubes in). You only have to look at 34059 and 34027 to see how these repairs can grow and grow the further you get into the overhaul. Lets hope it's not too much!

Does anyone know when this overhaul is due to start? I was told that a complete new Firebox would need to be made??? Not sure how true that is?

Let's hope she doesn't need a new firebox! Hopefully the overhaul will start sooner rather than later although the guy's at the railway seem to think that the company will be doing 76017 after 31806 and that the volunteer team on 45379 will do either 75079 or 34105. I think that the fact that 35005's boiler repairs have been costed / estimated can give us some hope.

I thought that it was 34016 that needed the new firebox?

The Inner Firebox as I understand it was very thin. I will try and get hold of some of my contacts who still volunteer at the line to see if I can find out a bit more and see if they have come up with a date to overhaul the loco.
I guess i will find out more, once I can get around volunteering at the line once more.

Hello all, just a quick update on 35005, as many of you now know her tender has been placed in the main shed for work to comence on placing it behind 34007. Secondly, the insulation under her boiler cladding has been removed so it doesnt cause problems when it comes for her turn for overhaul, this I understand was a problem experianced with stripping downn 76017.

73096

P.S Does anyone know if her tender is to be repainted before placement behind 34007?

Welcome to the forum 73096. I wasn't aware that the Insulation under 35005 had been removed. As for the tender being repainted, I would imagine that it won't. All depends if Duncan and his team have the time I guess. Especially now that the U has just had a fantastic new paint job.

Very true, the U and 45379 do look brilliant. Yes the isulation on CP was taken off and the nameplates have also been stored away. Not to sure if they all the pipework that was on the boiler including the whistle, have been put back yet. I'll have a look next time im at Ropley.

Just one question that I am not 100% sure on? But are 35005's Nameplates Original? I would imagine not as most; if not all had them stolen towards the end of steam. I always wished this was a question that I had asked.

I know a gricer, who is also an ardent "Titanic" enthusiast, and he has one of the nameplates from 35004 mounted on the wall above the fireplace in his lounge, surrounded by other "Titanic" memorabilia. Moreover, it is a genuine nameplate!

Not sure what the Resemblance is having an Original Bulleid Nameplate who is an avid collector of Titanic memorabilia. maybe he would like to donate 35004's plate to me?? Wink

As for 35005's plate - I'd love to know which one is the Original. I vaguely remember talk of an original Bulleid namepate that was sitting at the back of the shed in the old rotting mail coach. Although I couldn't say which one it was??

There is a connection - R.M.S. Titanic was owned by the White Star Line, and the name of 35004 is Cunard White Star

I somehow think that he may want to hang on to the nameplate.

"Lamport and Holt Line" recently sold for something like £10-12K - with the "Titanic" connection, I suspect that Cunard White Star would fetch quite a bit more!
