I thought that the following might be of interest to some of our esteemed correspondents, and the following appears on their website:-

"As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Kent Coast Electrification we welcome you to the 2009 EMU Days. This event is a chance to ride in historic electric multiple units (EMUs) on the East Kent Railway.

The usual attractions are open, including the miniature railway, the model railway coach and the EPB Preservation Group sales stand. Books, DVDs and other items are for sale with all profits going to restore the vintage electric units in use today.

Trains will be formed of various EMUs hauled by D4113 coupled with Motor Luggage Vans 68001 & 68002 .The 12.30 & 13.30 service from Shepherdswell will see the Buffet Bar in operation and the 15.15 service will operate under electric power for most of the outward journey.

The following services are planned, subject to availability -
Timetable for Saturday & Sunday

11.00 - 2EPB5759 &MLV68001
12.30 - 4CEP7105 & MLV 68002
13.30 - 4CEP7105 & MLV 68002
15.15 - 2EPB5759 & MLV68001

The following electric trains can been enjoyed during both days.

5759--a 2EPB unit built in 1956 at Ashford and Eastleigh railway works. This is the only non corridor unit left in regular passenger use in Britain.

7105--a 4Cep unit with the last surviving Buffet car of the type used in Bep units. Unit 7105 was built in 1958-Happy 51st Birthday! The Buffet car will be open for alcoholic, soft drinks and other refreshments.

Motor Luggage Vans (MLV) 68001 (green ends), 68002 (Red/white And Blue livery) will see use on trains. All were built for use on the “Boat Trains” to Dover and Folkestone. They could run on battery power alongside quays to load luggage on ships.

Diesel loco D4113/09.025. This loco is of a type used by the Southern Region with a higher top speed than other similar locos. Built in 1962 at Horwich.

Normal Price fares apply of £7 for Adults, £6 for Seniors, £4 for Children
and £18 for a Family Ticket (2 Adults,2 Children)"

Sounds like it could be a good day - Shame that the line is so short - Plus with the Units they have got that the line can't be electrified??

Are there any plans for Electrification and Extension of the line?

It's a nice little set up they have. The line continues for approximately 23ch past Eythorne station over the level crossing towards Wigmore Lane towards where the bridge used to be. The bridge was demolished not long after the closure of the pit, but the abutments are still there.

There is a plan for installation of a "juice rail", and the first piece was installed a few months ago.

They are fortunate insofar as they now have four MLVs for providing traction for the 2Hap and 4C(B)ep, in addition to the diesel shunter. One of the MLVs has now been fitted with a generator which is used for charging the batteries. When they were earning their keep in service, the generator worked off the motors that were receiving power from the "juice rail".

Apparently, going off-subject, their beer festival and barbecue was a great success.
