Re: 34059 in preservation
Unfortunately she wouldn't do very well on the mainline anyway because she only has 1 Damper..... But a great loco and a good steamer - What was she like back in the 60's???
Re: 34059 in preservation
Don't remember anything particularly great but will have a look when I get access to my records again.

Be great to hear some good stuff and see some good images of 34059 on the mainline from the 60's! So when you have time Don, will be great to see or hear.....

Re: 34059 in preservation
Apparently Bulleids were designed initially as I have been told with only one damper? Can anybody clarify this?
Also people say a Bulleid doesn't belong on the Bluebell! I agree as I think they look and behave better on the MHR.
How many Bulleids have been to the Bluebell.
Obviously Blackmore Vale and Sir Archibald Sinclair!
35005 - Canadian Pacific, Taw Valley, Eddystone and I am pretty sure one other? Or maybe a couple of others??

Re: 34059 in preservation
If memory serves me correctly the Bullied Pacifics were designed/built without dampers. I remember reading of O V S Bulleid asking a fireman (who was struggling to avoid his loco blowing off) what he thought of the loco. The fireman (not recognizing his CME) said "If only the bloody fool that designed these had fitted dampers I wouldn't have the problems I have now". Bulleids reply was " I do not fit my locomotives with devices to prevent steaming".

Re: 34059 in preservation
Dampers are to control the flow of air through the firebed. As a general rule of thumb when running engine first the rear dampers would be open and when running tender first the front dampers would be opened. Closing the dampers shuts off the air supply to the firebed and will have the effect of cooling and deadening the fire. An even air-flow through the firebed is an essential element of combustion - no air no fire! Air is sucked through the firebed by the creation of the smoke box vacuum - an essential feature of locomotive design from the days of the Rocket. Alterations to blastpipes are esentially about controlling the smokebox vacuum, as well as improving the flow of the locos exhaust. Hope this helps to clarify matters

Re: 34059 in preservation
It will be nice to see 34059 back in traffic once the Bluebell have completed the boiler repairs. (Cracks were found above the elbows on the thermic syphons and replacement sections have been supplied by Pridhams).

Re: 34059 in preservation
Thats not good news to hear from a loco that especially hasn't long been in service from its recent overhaul?!?! Was this not seen as a problem earlier on I wonder from the boiler inspector?

There was no sign of any damage or cracks on the syphons when the boiler was overhauled and was only spotted during her recent boiler exam.
See following link for a brief statement on the situation from the Bulleid Society:

Some cracking pics of the loco in action there. Hopefully they'll get it fixed soon.

Re: 34059 in preservation
I dropped in at the Bluebell today and judging by the noise and sparks coming out of 34059's firehole it looks as though the repairs to her thermic syphons may have started! Let's hope so.

New update (dated 07/07/2010) on the Bulleid Society website showing the ongoing repair to the knuckles of 34059's thermic syphons. A photograph shows the left hand syphons patch sections tack welded in place and a start having been made to those for the right hand syphon.

Re: 34059 in preservation
Work continues apace on 34059 with the loco as of Yesterday now moved outside the main shed at Sheffield Park. Whilst items were refitted in the smokebox a fitter was fettling the clack mounts on the boiler prior to their refitting. Lets hope she will be ready before the Bluebells 50th event!

Re: 34059 in preservation
34059 would now appear to be back in traffic having arrived at Horsted Keynes after lunch today (Saturday 24th) towing withdrawn Bulleid compatriot 34023.

Now that as a photo I would love to see.
Re: 34059 in preservation
34059 has been withdrawn again for more repairs to the boiler. This time the problem area is around the firehole / firedoors. The loco is expected to be repaired in time for the Giants of Steam event in October.

Re: 34059 in preservation
From what I understand this too was also an issue when the loco had first entered traffic. Could it be that this was only a temporary repair?

Not sure, but it is certainly causing them problems now.

Re: 34059 in preservation
The nature of the repairs to 34059 are that an area of the inner firebox close to the firehole needs to be cut out and replaced with new plate which the Bluebell already has in stock.
